Dance - Riverdance Show The major form of dancing in Ireland, traditional Irish dancing is divided into hornpipes, jigs and reels. A traditional Irish band would usually play at a ‘Ceili’ where dances are traditionally performed. The now widely known show Riverdance has promoted traditional Irish dancing abroad. Other shows inspired by the quasi legendary Riverdance have been created more recently. Although these are only loosely based on Irish dancing, their contribution to the revival of traditional dancing is |
undeniable. There is no national school of dance in Ireland, although there are many school and companies of dancing that teach and perform ballet and modern dance. There are two dance theatres in Dublin: the Dance Theatre of Ireland and the Irish Modern Dance Theatre. Cork is home to the only venue dedicated to dance only in Ireland: the Firkin Crane Centre. |
