St Anne’s Cathedral (call 90332328 for information) is a massive building in the Hiberno-Romanesque style which was fully complety in the 1990s although construction started about a century before. The cathedral’s nave houses 10 pillars with carvings illustrating Belfast life, the Freemasons’ pillar being the most notable. Northwest from the cathedral stands Clifton House, a fine 18th-century building which before being converted into a nursing home, was built as a poorhouse. Other |
buildings of interest in the cathedral area include the Georgian Commercial Building, the Northern Bank Building, the magnificent Ulster Bank Building, an Italianate extravaganza, and the Art Deco styled Bank of Ireland Building and Sinclair Store. |
