Accommodation_Roscommon Sightseeing and Visiting: Cistercian Boyle Abbey (call 966 2604 for information) was founded in the 12th century by monks from Mellifont (county Louth). It was once a fort when in the 17th century military forces occupied the abbey. southwest of Boyle: the Douglas Hyde Interpretive Centre (call 094-987 0016 for information). Drumanone Dolmen is one of the largest of the country and dates back to 2,000 BC, if not earlier. A great place for walking or for a day out with a picnic, Lough Key Forest Park (call 966 2363 for information) covers 290 hectares. There is a number of islands on the lake, where ruins can be seen. Located in a breathtaking scenery above Lough Allen, the Arigna Mining Experience (call 964 6466 for information or visit www.arignaminingexperience.ie) provides information on the bad working conditions of minors in the area. The Arigna Miners Way and historical trail (call 964 6702 for information) retraces the route that was taken by miners going to work. |
