The second-smallest county of Ireland, Carlow’s charm lies in picturesque
villages which have little changed over the past hundred years, and an
undulating countryside dominated by the Blackstairs Mountains.
CARLOW TOWN
Little remains of Carlow’s medieval past, but the student city is
undergoing renovation. The Carlow Brewing Company (call 913 4356 for
information or visit www.carlowbrewing.com) is an interesting visit and
includes a glass of the ‘black-stuff’. |
AROUND CARLOW TOWN
Browne’s Hill Dolmen is a famous portal dolmen of Ireland. It is
actually the largest in Europe and dates back to approximately 5,000
years ago. Killeshin Church is what is left of an important monastery
which was destroyed in the 18th century. The Georgian village of Borris
has a lot of character as it basically looks untouched. A number of
lovely walks can be made around the town. Mt Leinster is worth a hike
only for the magnificent views over the county and over counties
Wexford and Wicklow. The South Leinster Way starts at Kildavin. |
